The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a warning to vehicle owners about the dangers of using substandard cylinders when converting their vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This advice is crucial as CNG systems operate under high pressure, and any compromise in the quality of the cylinders or the installation process could lead to dangerous situations, such as cylinder ruptures or explosions, particularly in Nigeria’s hot climate.
In response to the increasing interest in CNG due to its environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness, SON has also released 80 standards to regulate CNG use in road vehicles. These standards cover various aspects such as CNG conversion kits, storage vessels, vehicle diagnostics, and refueling stations. They emphasize the importance of adhering to these guidelines to ensure the safety and reliability of CNG systems in vehicles.
Poor road conditions and the lack of qualified technicians in Nigeria make it even more important for vehicle owners to use certified, high-quality equipment and ensure proper installation and maintenance of CNG systems.
