A disturbing scene reportedly unfolded at the Labour Party national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday as Julius Abure, the recently sacked national chairman, allegedly mobilized thugs to disrupt a scheduled press briefing by Senator Nenadi Usman and members of the newly constituted caretaker committee.
According to eyewitnesses and sources within the party, Abure and his loyalists sprang into action upon receiving intelligence that Senator Usman’s team was on its way to the secretariat for a media engagement. The confrontation was narrowly averted as security personnel intervened to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating.
The incident comes on the heels of a Supreme Court judgment that nullified Abure’s chairmanship and affirmed the leadership of Senator Usman, describing the chairmanship dispute as an internal party matter beyond judicial jurisdiction.
Speaking to Madmo News, a member of the caretaker committee condemned the attempted disruption, calling it “a reckless show of desperation and a threat to internal democracy.” The source added, “The Labour Party secretariat must remain a symbol of unity and progress, not a battleground for intimidation and lawlessness.”
Efforts to reach Abure or his media team for comment have been unsuccessful as of press time.
This latest development underscores the deepening factional crisis within the Labour Party and raises further concerns about stability ahead of the next electoral cycle. Political observers say the party must act swiftly to restore order and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles.
