The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a temporary injunction barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from releasing federal allocations to Rivers State. This decision arises from a legal dispute led by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This group argues that the Rivers State Executive failed to comply with a court order to resubmit the 2024 budget to the Assembly.
A previous ruling had invalidated the budget’s approval, which had been conducted by a different legislative faction, citing irregularities related to a factional split within the Assembly.
This dispute has complex political dimensions, including alleged alliances and prior rulings that were escalated to the Supreme Court. While the CBN and other defendants requested the court to dismiss the case, the judge ruled that the hearings would continue, reserving judgment for a later date.
