Thomas Tuchel, the former manager of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, is reportedly in advanced talks with the Football Association (FA) to take over as the England national team manager. This is coming due to Gareth Southgate’s resignation after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the final of the 2024 European Championship. The FA is looking for a permanent replacement, and Tuchel, currently out of work since his departure from Bayern, has emerged as a serious candidate.
The interim manager, Lee Carsley, who was promoted from his role as U21 coach, led England through several matches, but a shock 2-1 defeat to Greece significantly hurt his chances of securing the job on a full-time basis. While Carsley had previously played down his chances of staying in charge, other high-profile names such as Graham Potter and Eddie Howe have also been linked to the role.
The FA is reportedly keeping the process discreet, with no formal interviews yet conducted, but informal talks have been ongoing with potential candidates. Tuchel is seen as a strong option due to his successful coaching resume, including his time in the Premier League, where he won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. His potential return to England would be closely watched, given his previous success and reputation as one of the top managers in Europe.
