Narathiwat, Thailand – A bomb explosion at a cultural festival in southern Thailand has left three people dead and over a dozen critically injured, officials confirmed on Saturday. The attack occurred in Narathiwat province, an area frequently affected by insurgent violence.
The blast struck during the evening festivities, when families had gathered to enjoy traditional performances and food stalls. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as the explosion ripped through the crowd, leaving many injured and causing significant damage to nearby structures.
Emergency Response
Police and emergency services quickly responded to the scene, evacuating victims to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that three people died on-site, while dozens sustained injuries, including women and children. At least 12 remain in critical condition.
Investigation Launched
Officials have launched an investigation into the incident, which they suspect is linked to separatist insurgent groups operating in Thailand’s southern provinces. Narathiwat, along with Pattani and Yala provinces, has been the epicenter of a decades-long conflict involving insurgents seeking greater autonomy for the region’s predominantly Muslim population.
“This is a cowardly act targeting innocent civilians,” said Narathiwat Governor Sanan Pongaksorn. “We are working closely with security forces to track down those responsible.”
Government Condemnation
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families of the victims and pledging to strengthen security measures in the region. “The safety of our citizens is our utmost priority, and we will do everything possible to prevent further tragedies,” the Prime Minister stated.
Community Impact
The festival, an annual event celebrating local culture, has been suspended indefinitely as the community mourns the loss of life. Residents have expressed fear and frustration, calling for greater government efforts to ensure their safety amid ongoing violence in the region.
International organizations, including the United Nations, have also condemned the attack, urging all parties to seek peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict.
This bombing is one of the deadliest attacks in recent months in southern Thailand, highlighting the persistent challenges of insecurity and violence in the region. Security forces have intensified patrols in the area as investigations continue.
