Nigeria In a stunning twist of political fate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who just days ago mocked Nigeria’s opposition, now faces a deepening crisis within his own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly in the North-East region.
President Tinubu recently made headlines for ridiculing the opposition, boasting about their so-called “moment of disarray.” However, according to Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, the President’s words have not only backfired but now haunt his own political camp.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Tuesday, Senator Nenadi Usman described Tinubu’s comments as “beneath what’s expected of a democratic leader,” adding that they reflect “a worrying disdain for the essential pillars of democratic engagement.”
She stated:
> “A president who celebrates the weakening of opposition is, by extension, celebrating the weakening of democracy itself.”
Senator Usman pointed to the chaos currently unraveling within the APC in the North-East including the marginalization of Vice President Kashim Shettima as evidence of internal decay fueled by a one-man agenda. “What President Tinubu wished for others has turned to plague his own political household,” she declared.
Reports from the region reveal rising tensions, with party members divided over alleged impositions, backdoor appointments, and power grabs that have undermined Vice President Shettima’s influence in his home zone. The Labour Party says the fallout has laid bare the APC’s internal contradictions and a dangerous disregard for process, dignity, and national unity.
> “This is not poetic justice. It is political karma,” Sen. Nenadi added.
Despite the crisis, the Labour Party says it will not gloat. Instead, it calls on Nigerians to reflect on the current political culture and rise in defense of democracy. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to building a nation where opposition is not persecuted but protected,” she concluded.
As the political drama unfolds, one thing is clear: Nigeria is watching — and remembering.
