President Bola Tinubu recently issued a clear directive to his cabinet: continued service in his administration is strictly contingent on results and accountability. Tinubu stated, “If you are performing, there’s nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, we review. If there’s no performance, you leave us.” This message, delivered at a recent cabinet retreat, underscores his administration’s commitment to impactful governance through rigorous evaluation and quarterly performance reviews.
Tinubu established the Central Delivery Coordination Unit, led by Hadiza Bala-Usman, to measure ministers’ performance against defined targets. This unit’s evaluations consider deliverables, public perception, and overall ministry outputs, offering ministers a roadmap for improvement and addressing non-performance issues in real time.
The President’s strategy reflects his broader Renewed Hope Agenda, a policy initiative addressing Nigeria’s economic and social challenges. Under this agenda, Tinubu aims to stabilize the economy, implement structural reforms, and tackle long-standing issues in sectors like security, healthcare, and education. His administration has recently introduced new foreign exchange reforms, increased budgetary support for security, and invested in initiatives like compressed natural gas-powered buses to reduce high transportation costs.
By prioritizing transparency and accountability, Tinubu seeks to reshape Nigeria’s governance landscape. For him, each minister’s performance will directly impact their tenure, underscoring a shift towards results-driven leadership in Nigeria.
