President Bola Tinubu is pushing for the conversion of petrol stations across Nigeria into outlets for compressed natural gas (CNG), in a bid to reduce the nation’s reliance on petrol. This is part of his larger strategy to address high fuel costs after the removal of fuel subsidies and promote cleaner, more sustainable energy alternatives.
The Nigerian government is working with private sector partners, such as NIPCO Gas, to establish numerous CNG stations, which will help alleviate transportation costs. By the end of 2024, around 35 CNG stations are expected to be operational nationwide, with additional expansions planned.
In addition to station conversions, Tinubu has mandated that 1 million vehicles be switched to CNG by 2025, which would significantly reduce fuel costs for Nigerians and lessen the environmental impact of vehicle emissions.
