The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has firmly opposed the Federal Government’s proposal to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate, describing it as a move that will worsen the economic hardship already affecting millions of Nigerians. In a statement released on Sunday, the TUC warned that any VAT hike would lead to higher prices for goods and services, further straining the purchasing power of citizens who are grappling with inflation, low wages, and rising living costs. The union emphasized that the current economic climate requires policies that alleviate the financial burden on Nigerians, not exacerbate it. They called on the government to focus on alternative revenue-generation strategies, such as reducing waste in governance, addressing corruption, and expanding the tax base by bringing more businesses into the formal economy.“The average Nigerian is already struggling to make ends meet. Increasing VAT will only worsen the situation by making basic necessities even more expensive,” the statement read. The TUC further urged the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of citizens and adopt measures that promote economic growth and stability rather than policies that disproportionately affect the working class and vulnerable populations. As debates around the proposed VAT increase continue, Nigerians await the government’s response to these concerns.
