The partnership between the UK and Nigeria in combating drug trafficking is showing significant progress, as confirmed by the UK Home Office. The UK’s collaboration with Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has resulted in successful operations that disrupt drug cartels and organized crime. British officials have praised the NDLEA for its efforts, particularly in maritime drug enforcement. For instance, the NDLEA’s marine unit, upgraded in 2022, has intercepted over 61,000 kilograms of various drugs, demonstrating the growing threat of drug trafficking through Nigeria’s waterways.
To further strengthen this collaboration, the UK has provided critical logistical support, including the refurbishment of patrol boats and the construction of a new NDLEA maritime headquarters. This increased capacity is crucial as both countries have seen an uptick in drug detections, showcasing the effectiveness of their joint operations. The UK government remains committed to supporting the NDLEA through training and infrastructure development to continue these successes.
