The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will launch its maiden Computer-Based Test (CBT) version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on October 29, 2024. This marks a significant shift from the traditional paper-based exams to a more technologically advanced system, aimed at enhancing efficiency and curbing examination malpractice. The first group of candidates to experience this change will be private candidates across various urban centers in Nigeria.
The examination will feature a blend of fully digital and hybrid formats. Objective tests will be conducted entirely on computers, allowing students to answer questions on-screen. Meanwhile, the essay and practical components will follow a hybrid model, where candidates view the questions on-screen but write their responses using answer booklets.
WAEC has spent considerable time preparing for this transition. Officials have conducted trial tests and mock exams across the nation to ensure students are familiar with the new system. According to the council, proctors and examination officials have been trained extensively to supervise the computerized process. The exam will be offered in a variety of subjects, with a special focus on ensuring inclusivity for candidates with special needs.
