FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently authorized a controversial demolition in the Lugbe area of Abuja, which has left many residents homeless and triggered significant backlash. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) demolished over 50 residential buildings, claiming they were illegally constructed on unauthorized land. According to FCTA officials, these structures were erected by “land grabbers” who allegedly sold plots without proper legal documentation or government approval.
The demolitions have stirred criticism, especially from affected residents and the Home Builders Association of Nigeria. They argue that the FCTA is unjustly reclaiming land and reallocating it to private developers. Many of the property owners, some of whom claim to have valid titles, are now calling on President Tinubu and Minister Wike to stop further demolitions and review the FCTA’s actions, which they see as heavy-handed and disregarding their rights.
