Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced a significant increase in its Premium+ subscription fees in Nigeria. The monthly cost for the ad-free service has risen by 51%, jumping from ₦7,300 to ₦34,000. The new pricing, which takes effect immediately for new subscribers, will apply to existing users starting January 20, 2025.
Globally, the platform has implemented similar price hikes for its Premium+ tier. In the United States, the monthly fee has increased from $16 to $22, a 37.5% rise. European Union subscribers will now pay €21 per month, up from €16. Meanwhile, the basic subscription remains unchanged at $3 per month.
X has defended the price adjustment, citing the need to support enhanced features available to Premium+ users. These features include an ad-free experience and advanced AI-powered tools designed to improve user engagement.
The sharp increase in Nigeria, however, has sparked criticism, with many questioning the affordability of the service in a region where subscription-based platforms face unique economic challenges. X has not clarified why the price adjustments vary significantly across different countries.
This development comes as subscription-based platforms, including Netflix, have been raising prices globally, prompting concerns among users about value for money. X’s latest move is expected to fuel further debate about the sustainability of premium pricing in emerging markets.
